OnePlus is about to enter the fold.
Apologies for the bad pun, but I had to do it. Anyway, the Chinese electronics giant, hot off the release of the OnePlus 11, announced at Mobile World Congress that it plans to enter the foldable market this year. And that's about all we know.
Company president Kinder Liu offered a bit more context on the decision in a statement given to the media.
“Our first foldable phone will have the signature OnePlus fast and smooth experience. It must be a flagship phone that doesn't settle because of its folding form, in terms of industrial design, mechanical technology, and other aspects. We want to launch a device that aims to be at the pinnacle experience of today’s foldable market.”
In other words, OnePlus wants its first foldable (which doesn't yet have a name, confirmed design, or release date) to be a good phone as well as a foldable phone.
As for what the phone will actually look like or do, it's hard to say. OnePlus parent company Oppo has a new foldable called the Find N2 Flip, with a clamshell design reminiscent of Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip series. The OnePlus foldable could condense down in size like a clamshell foldable, or it could expand in size like the tablet-esque Galaxy Z Fold series.
Unfortunately, we just don't know yet what to expect from OnePlus's foldable debut. But at least we know we can expect it.
