The nominations for the 2024 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards are here, giving us a clearer idea of what to expect from the acting categories and Best Picture categories at the 2024 Academy Awards.
Many of the nominations are not surprises: Every film and TV actor who took home a trophy at the 2024 Golden Globes earned a SAG nod. Critically acclaimed box office juggernauts like Barbie and Oppenheimer are poised to win big, going head-to-head in the film ensemble and supporting actor categories, with leads Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy earning nominations in their respective categories as well. Historically, the award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture is often an indicator of what will win Best Picture at the Oscars, giving nominees American Fiction, Barbie, The Color Purple, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Oppenheimer a huge leg up.
But aside from the Barbenheimer of it all, let's just say that these nominations feature some truly astounding snubs. Films like Past Lives, Anatomy of a Fall, and May December were shut out entirely, as were their stars (and Golden Globe nominees) Greta Lee, Sandra Hüller, and Charles Melton — all of whom are more than deserving of recognition. Meanwhile, on the TV side, Succession's Jeremy Strong was overlooked in this round of nominations, unlike castmates Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Matthew Macfadyen, perhaps indicating he won't be as strong of a contender at the 2024 Emmys. (How very Kendall Roy of him.)
